Remarkable business people who have been doing some truly remarkable things attended the prestigious London Business School Real Innovation Awards hosted by Professor Julian Birkinshaw and Jeff Skinner. Every year, two winners are chosen for each category – the People’s Choice (voted by public ballot) and the Judges’ Choice (selected by an expert judging panel).
In 2020, the first-ever virtual ceremony was on the Innovation in Adversity theme, a current topic that many of us are affected by today. This year also saw the introduction of a new category with the same name to recognise the efforts of the people and organisations who have launched or continued to run their businesses and services in the face of a crisis like the current global pandemic. The ceremony featured a fireside chat with the category winners and LBS faculty sharing their thoughts on why adversity seems so often to be the wellspring of innovation with suggestions on how to manage it.
Judges choice winners are: Instabug, Duolingo, Tomilola Adejana, Lemonade Insurance, Arth and the team from Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who has also won the People’s Choice award for their category.
The People’s Choice winners included: Swiss Vault Systems, Term Finance Holdings, Abbas Dayekh, Avataar.me and Field Intelligence for its pharma-tech platform Shelf Life.
The Real Innovation Awards are organised by the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE), a research institute that resides within London Business School. The awards showcase the real ingredients of innovation: tenacity, originality, good timing and serendipity.
