Sources and research method
How the Capital Raising Center organizes and supports information
The Center makes broad capital-raising concepts easier to understand while preserving the distinctions between educational explanation, official information, and advice for a particular situation. This page describes the framework, the questions it uses to organize inquiry, and how to use the directory of 80 selected official source links.
About this information
General educational information. Scope, dates, authority, and applicability should be checked before relying on it.

Research and editorial method
Six principles for responsible educational information
The method is intended to make the source, scope, date, interpretation, and limits of information visible to readers.
Define the information
Each explanation should identify its topic, intended reader, geographic or institutional scope, and material exclusions.
Begin with primary sources
For official requirements, filings, registrations, program information, and market records, the responsible authority or program owner is the preferred starting point within its remit.
Keep source and explanation distinct
A source’s own statement, a 1BusinessWorld educational synthesis, an attributed professional interpretation, and an unresolved question should not be presented as though they carry the same authority.
Show dates and limitations
Time-sensitive information needs a review date, and every source should be used only for the jurisdiction, period, subject, and purpose it actually addresses.
Account for jurisdictional variation
The organization, participants, communications, offer, assets, program, market, and transaction may connect a matter to different laws, authorities, and professional requirements.
State uncertainty
When the available evidence does not support a reliable answer, the Center should identify the gap or omit the claim instead of implying certainty.

Six broad categories for beginning a capital inquiry
The categories help readers begin an inquiry. They can overlap and are not universal legal, tax, accounting, regulatory, or market classifications.
01
Internal resources
Cash an organization already holds or generates through operations and chooses to use, subject to applicable restrictions, approvals, commitments, and liquidity needs.
02
Customer-related cash
Receipts and advance payments arising from customer transactions. Receivables finance and future-revenue finance are separate financing arrangements.
03
Grants and incentives
Program-based assistance whose form, conditions, permitted uses, and repayment characteristics depend on the specific program.
04
Debt
Funding provided under an agreement that includes repayment terms.
05
Equity
Funding provided in exchange for shares or another ownership interest.
06
Hybrid and contingent capital
An instrument that combines, or may change between, debt-like and equity-like features under its stated terms.

Ten questions that can structure further investigation
The following questions organize common areas to investigate. They are not a universal process, legal checklist, or recommendation.
- 01
Purpose and amount
What is the capital for, how much may be needed, when may it be needed, and over what period?
- 02
Starting position
What cash, revenue, assets, obligations, restrictions, approvals, and existing financing already shape the organization’s position?
- 03
Possible structures
Which broad funding categories might be relevant to investigate, and where might categories overlap or combine?
- 04
Economics and trade-offs
What repayment, cost, ownership, dilution, control, security, cash-flow, timing, and downside consequences could each structure create?
- 05
Jurisdiction and rules
Which countries, states, markets, regulators, program owners, contractual regimes, and tax or accounting frameworks may be connected to the matter?
- 06
Eligibility and access
What current eligibility, investor, lender, intermediary, program, market, or authorization requirements may apply?
- 07
Evidence and preparation
Which financial, operational, legal, ownership, governance, impact, technical, or other information may need to be prepared and verified?
- 08
Communication and diligence
What may be communicated, to whom, through which channels, and what verification or due diligence may be expected?
- 09
Terms and completion
Which approvals, documents, disclosures, conditions, protections, fees, conflicts, and closing steps may require careful review?
- 10
Continuing responsibilities
What reporting, repayment, governance, use-of-funds, disclosure, covenant, tax, accounting, recordkeeping, or other obligations may continue afterward?
