The SEC maintains the official register
Exchanges operating in the United States register with the SEC as national securities exchanges under Section 6 of the Exchange Act; the SEC publishes the official register of all registered exchanges.
Nasdaq publishes initial listing standards
The Nasdaq Stock Market identifies three U.S. market tiers, and applicants must satisfy financial, liquidity, and corporate-governance requirements; processing a listing application generally takes four to six weeks, although timing varies.
The NYSE publishes the Listed Company Manual
The New York Stock Exchange publishes its listing and governance requirements in the NYSE Listed Company Manual; the NYSE group's registered exchanges also include NYSE American, NYSE Arca, NYSE Texas, and NYSE National.
Newer exchanges are on the register
The register also includes the Long-Term Stock Exchange, the Green Impact Exchange, 24X National Exchange, and the Texas Stock Exchange, which was approved by the SEC on September 30, 2025 and has announced a phased trading launch for July 2026.
Regulated markets operate off-exchange
OTC Markets Group organizes broker-dealer quotation and trading in three public markets — OTCQX, OTCQB, and Pink — through OTC Link ATS, an SEC-registered alternative trading system operated by a FINRA-member broker-dealer; securities traded there are quoted rather than exchange-listed.
