IBM’s Sky Matthews | The Impact of 5G and Edge Computing on IoT Design & Development

In episode 61 of the IoT For All Podcast, IBM’s CTO for Engineering Lifecycle Management Applications Sky Matthews joins us to talk about the impact of 5G and new edge computing developments on the design and development of IoT solutions, specifically in the enterprise space.

Sky has a great deal of experience working with clients in complex and embedded systems development across many industries, including telecom equipment, aerospace and defense, automotive, and electronics. At IBM, his focus is on the application of artificial intelligence and analytics in system engineering, designing for IoT, and the creation and management of digital twins.

To kick the episode off, Sky gave us some background on IBM and its role in the IoT ecosystem. We also discussed how that landscape has matured as the focus of companies in the space moved from the technology to the tangible ROI that IoT solutions provide. Sky shared some insight into the perspective of their customers, companies that are often just realizing that what they’re seeking isn’t a solution to a specific problem, but a complete digital transformation.

Sky also spoke to IBM’s position on partnerships, specific to the IoT space, and how integral they are to the success of IoT deployments. Sky said, “partnerships are really essential – we wouldn’t pretend for a second that IBM covers all of IoT… we certainly have our focus areas, but the ecosystem is hugely important and those partnerships are fundamental to our business.”

Changing to a more industry-wide topic, Sky spoke to the impact he expected 5G and hybrid multi-cloud computing would have on the industry as a whole, especially at the enterprise level – allowing for a host of new and unique use cases to become available. And while he said 5G will be transformative, Sky said that large-scale adoption was still a few years out. Much like autonomous vehicles or IoT itself, Sky said that it would take time for the technology to become accessible enough to really transform the landscape.

From his experience designing and developing IoT solutions, Sky spoke to the changes he expected there, including the new mindset that will be required as the line blurs between edge and cloud computing.

To bring the conversation to a close, we spoke on some of the obstacles facing the IoT industry – both with COVID-19 bearing down on us and some of the longer-term challenges that the ecosystem faces. Sky said that the coronavirus pandemic is a transformative event, saying that “the understanding of how connected our world is and how connected our systems are is just made so glaringly clear, here.” Across organizations, Sky said he believed the challenge would be increasing transparency to reduce the silos of our current companies and industries.

“If there’s a good side to this, it’s that it will spur an incredible amount of creativity and innovation,” Sky said.

Top 3 Best Practices for Designing IoT Data Visualizations

Have you ever read a 15+ page research paper without any tables or diagrams? Chances are you haven’t, and even if you have, it was probably very gruesome to read. With so much information being thrown at us every second of every day, visual communication is key to preventing information burnout while also presenting important data to your users or audiences.

The practice of using charts, tables, and diagrams to present information is called data visualization. It can be used in almost any project and on any medium, provided it’s used to convey real, reliable data. This article will walk you through the top 3 best design practices in data visualization to make your next IoT project as informative and user-friendly as possible. Let’s get started!

1. Provide Tool Tips That Breakdown the Information on Hover.

Remember the Microsoft Word paperclip who would pop-up in the middle of your work to harass (…I mean help) you? A key part of data visualization is making the information more appealing and interactive. One way of making this information appealing is by adding tool-tips that give a more detailed overview of what the user is seeing. This allows the user to stay engaged with the interface while also breaking the information down into bite-sized pieces. It’s a small addition that’ll ultimately reduce frustration and provide more value to the user.

On the Siren Marine desktop fleet dashboard (you can find out more about Siren Marine here), users can hover over a boat to see its name, speed (if in motion), location, and a timestamp of when it was last updated.

2. Create Distinct Visual Cues for Alerts. Set Them Apart So That the User Understands.

One way to visualize data is through iconography—a collection of symbols that depict the information in a visual format. With almost every IoT project, you’re going to use icons to visualize the information that’s coming through the back end in order to communicate the data more efficiently with your users. This helps create a pattern in the user habits so that when a particular icon looks different, they’ll get a visual cue to pay closer attention to that item. Think of it as a way of filtering and making sense of the troves of data IoT systems produce.

For example, Siren Marine’s dashboard (below) has two general types of icons: a normal state and an alert state. Boats in red direct the user to click on the icon to learn more about the alert.

3. Categorize/Bucket the Data on Graphs to Allow the User to Breakdown the Data

Categorization lets the user curate the data to match their immediate need. A single graph can synthesize a slew of information. Instead of having five different graphs that measure the same feature but different variables in your project, consider having one graph that can be altered to depict those different variables. This allows you to bucket all the information in a manner that lets the user compare the different variables of the same feature.

Take the graph below, for example, the user has the ability to choose between all of the different floors in the hospital to compare the average number of alerts per floor per month. This provides a more granular view of the sum total.

Whether you’re adding an analytics page with a slew of data, or you’re adding a small tooltip to keep your users engaged, remember that the end goal is frictionless user experience. Your users are the ones for whom you build the product. They are the ones who will help your platform grow. Focus on improving their experience with these IoT data visualization techniques and you’ve got yourself one heck of a produc!
