Lesson 1.3 | What is the impact of being in a permacrisis environment?
TRANSCRIPT
In 2022, the word of the year was polycrisis because of the multitude of crises that were taking place. In 2023, the word of the year was permacrisis because not only are there many crises, but there is also a continuing persistent onslaught of interconnected, interdependent disruptions coming without end, combined with ever-increasing uncertainty. One needs to only look at climate, cybersecurity issues, economic turbulence, people struggling for food, geopolitical tensions all around the world, health issues, immigration, refugee crises, labor issues, social issues, supply chain, and rapidly changing technologies, to name a few of the issues that businesses, nonprofits, and governments face. That is just what is going on in the environment we operate in.
This doesn't even account for market or industry issues closer to home with our customers, ecosystem partners, suppliers, society and community, and competitors. Still at home, we face talent management, leadership, culture, and operational challenges. All of this is going on at once, and there is no end in sight.
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of firefighting. I just don’t want to hang on. I want to thrive. I want to work in a place with a purpose where individuals collaborate, care about, respect each other, and recognize the value we each bring to the table.
We can do better than we are. We can learn to thrive in whitewater. Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting something different to happen. Who amongst us can deny suffering from some level of insanity? We need to see, think, and do differently. But I know we are all challenged with how do we change?
