Almost 6,000 soldiers are now guarding Poland’s frontier with neighbouring Belarus following a surge in border crossings.Poland has nearly doubled the number of soldiers deployed to guard its border with Belarus in response to a surge in the number of asylum seekers crossing into the country.
The new deployment, announced by Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Tuesday, means nearly 6,000 troops operate in the border region now, a significant rise in military presence in recent days.
On Saturday, Blaszczak had put the number of soldiers stationed in the area at more than 3,000.
