About

Locks are generally fitted by us for two reasons. Firstly, to prevent unauthorized access and secondly, as a deterrent against theft. The security provided by locks is only as good as the weakest link in the system. If we start with mortice locks then unless they have been very badly constructed or if they have been fitted with poor quality parts, today’s well-designed ones should not be susceptible to picking or manipulation. Most modern rim locks have similar resistance to picking and manipulation although some of the cheaper construction ones can be vulnerable. For an intruder into your home common sense will tell you that it is easier to gain entry via an unlocked door than one that is locked so make sure all ground floor doors are secured before you go to bed. You can do this by using either the internal or external locking mechanism, but if you have access to two locks it is advisable to use both. Most medium-priced mortice deadlocks fit into existing door furniture and are designed to allow entry from outside and exit from inside without any key operation being required. This retro-fit type of deadlock should be fitted to the main entrance door to your home. The advantage of these devices is that an intruder cannot gain entry from outside and then leave without locking the door behind them. If you have a relatively new home, or if there are any access points that are at risk such as a French window, then it may be advisable to fit an intruder-proof locking system to the door. Some of these devices can incorporate a deadlock and some have further securing features, such as locking bolts at top and bottom or side bars. The type you choose will depend on your circumstances and what level of security you require.
